PART ONE OSAKA: HEAT, RAIN & NEON

Arrival in the Heat

I landed in Osaka late on the evening at the beginning of July, stepping straight into a wall of heat that enveloped me like a thick blanket. The temperature soared into the high thirties, and the humidity hovered near ninety percent, making every breath feel heavy. Rain fell with such intensity that it felt like the sky itself was sweating profusely, drenching the city in a relentless downpour.

The airport lights reflected off the soaked pavement, transforming the surroundings into a glowing, electric haze that seemed to pulse with life. The vibrant colors of the neon signs were intensified by the rain, creating a surreal atmosphere that hinted at the energy of the city waiting to be explored. As I stepped outside, the air was thick and warm, a stark contrast to the cool, conditioned environment of the airport, and it filled me with a mix of excitement and trepidation.

The Industrial Ride Into the City

After a chaotic round of Google Translate tennis with my driver, who spoke little English, I finally found myself on my way. The long journey from Kansai Airport into the heart of Osaka began, and the city introduced itself through a tapestry of industrial sights. Refineries glowed ominously in the dark, their towering structures illuminated against the night sky, while steam rose from the ground, creating an ethereal mist that danced in the air.

The scene felt like it was ripped straight from the opening sequence of Blade Runner. Rain streaked across the windows of the taxi, blurring the lines between reality and fiction. Neon lights bled into the night, casting vibrant hues on everything they touched, and the world outside the window became a mesmerizing blur of colors and shapes. The cacophony of sounds—the distant hum of machinery, the rhythmic patter of rain, and the occasional blare of a horn—created a symphony that was uniquely Osaka.

A Chaotic Welcome to Japan

By the time I reached my hotel, exhaustion had fully set in, weighing down my limbs and clouding my mind. I stepped out of the taxi, reached for my phone to check the time and my messages… only to watch it slip from my pocket in a almost as if a tragic slow-motion moment, sliding across the slick, wet road before getting crushed under the wheels of another taxi. The sinking feeling in my stomach was palpable—a perfect, cinematic disaster.

Welcome to Japan!!!

Neon to the Hotel

My hotel was tucked away behind a bustling shopping mall, and I navigated through a corridor of bright neon signs that flickered and flashed with an almost hypnotic rhythm. The lights guided me like a runway through the rain, illuminating my path and adding a touch of magic to the dreary weather.

Once inside, I blasted the air-conditioning to MAX! to combat the heat that clung to my skin, took a long, invigorating shower to wash off the humidity, and tried to reset my mind for the days ahead. The sound of water cascading down felt like a cleansing ritual, washing away the chaos of travel and the initial mishaps that had colored my arrival.

I must give a shout out to the hotel concierge was fabulous and help me with my phone and a strange Englishman having a meltdown. The was a sign of things to come as I would find out the Japanese people are amassing, once you can understand each other.

BIC Camera to the Rescue

The first mission of the trip wasn’t photography or sightseeing—it was survival. I needed a new phone to navigate this vibrant city, especially after my unfortunate mishap. With determination, I set out into the rain-soaked streets of Osaka, making my way to BIC Camera, a cross between PC would and trader joe's. that promised a solution to my predicament.

I needed a new phone!!!

Navigating through Osaka’s streets in the pouring rain, I finally arrived at BIC Camera. The store was a mesmerizing maze of lights, sounds, and endless tech, each aisle bursting with gadgets and devices. After what felt like an eternity of browsing and comparing options, I finally had a new phone in hand, and the sense of relief was immediate. It felt like a lifeline in a city that was both exhilarating and overwhelming. The staff where helpful but Google Translate had to save the day once more. If I could have a super power it would be to be able to convers in any language. A skill that would have made Japan a whole lot easier. A new S26 Ultra in hand and Tax free to boot I was ready to take on the world.

Three Days in the Neon Rain

For the next three days, I immersed myself in the vibrant life of Osaka, walking for miles and miles racking up over 21000 steps a day through a city drenched in heat, rain, neon, and steam. Each day was a new adventure, filled with sights and sounds that captivated my senses.

The city is a living palette, a work of art that continuously evolves:

  • Glowing signs reflected in puddles, creating a mesmerizing dance of colours on the wet pavement.

  • Narrow alleys hummed with life, filled with the sounds of laughter, conversation, and the tantalizing aroma of street food wafting through the air.

  • Vending machines, each a small beacon of light, lit up corners with their vibrant displays, offering everything from Tea & coffee hot or cold to quirky snacks for great prices.

  • Canals shimmered under electric skies, their surfaces mirroring the chaos above, creating a sense of tranquility amidst the urban frenzy.

  • Lanterns glowed like tiny suns in the night, casting a warm, inviting light that beckoned passersby to explore further.

Every corner of Osaka was a frame waiting to be captured, each frame carrying a feeling—of warmth, of chaos, of beauty, and of a city that never truly sleeps. I felt like a part of this living, breathing entity, each step I took echoing the pulse of a city alive with energy and possibility.

Not sure if it's my age or I'm a dinosaur the way the Japanese youths dressed was completely alien to me as they all seemed to stuck in a strange movie world.
